About Biggleswade, Bedfordshire

Biggleswade is a market town in Bedfordshire in the East of England. It lies around 12 miles south-east of Bedford, 21 miles south-west of Cambridge and 10 miles north of Letchworth Garden City.

The A1 bypasses Biggleswade connecting it to London and Edinburgh, the B1040 road leads to Potton and St Ives whilst the B659 leads to Langford and Henlow.

Biggleswade railway station is on the East Cost Main Line. Regular Thameslink services on the Great Northern Route travel to Horsham via London Bridge, Redhill and Gatwick Airport. Great Northern train services run between London King’s Cross or Moorgate to Peterborough.

Some of the local attractions include Jordans Mill, Old Warden Aerodrome (hone of the Shuttleworth Collection of historic aeroplanes), The Swiss Garden in Old Warden Park and The Lodge RSPB nature reserve.

The main shopping area in town include the Market Place, the High Street and Hitchin Street. There is also a 20-unit retail park just outside of town. The Charter Market is held every Saturday and offers a variety of stalls selling fresh food, plants, gifts, clothing, household items and more. There is also a Tuesday market which is held in the same place, Market Square, and offers a smaller variety of stalls compared to the Saturday market.

Education in Biggleswade is provided by a three-tier education system, including lower schools, middle schools, Stratton Upper school and a sixth form college. There are also two Church of England Voluntary controlled schools as well as Ivey Valley School which caters for children with moderate to severe learning difficulties.

The local economy is largely dominated by the following sectors: wholesale, retail and vehicle repairs, manufacturing, construction, human health and social work and education. In May 2022 the Co-op Food Group opened a regional distribution centre providing a large number of local jobs. And of course Jordans a manufacturer of breakfast cereals and cereal bars is still based in Biggleswade.
