About Brighouse, Halifax, Huddersfield

Brighouse is a town in West Riding, West Yorkshire on the river Calder 4 miles east of Halifax and 4.2 miles north of Huddersfield with access to the M62 (junction 25) via the A643.

Brighouse Railway Station is on the Calderdale and Huddersfield line, making it excellent to commute to either place. Other services go to Leeds, and Southport via Hebden Bridge and Manchester Victoria.

The town centre offers a good selection of major supermarkets and local shops as well as the Brighouse Swimming Pool & Fitness Centre, Brighouse Cinema and 4 miles further in Halifax are several theatres. Brighouse boasts a good choice of pubs and restaurants, several parks and of course the opportunity to do riverside walks.

Halifax is one of the neighbouring towns and lies around 9 miles north of Huddersfield and 9 miles southwest of Bradford.

It is probably best known for Mackintosh’s chocolate products including Quality Street and Rolo, as well as Halifax Bank (now part of Lloyds Banking Group), which was founded here and still has its headquarter in the town.

Halifax is connected via the A58 that goes around the town west-bound to Leeds and all the way to Wetherby and east-bound to Prescot. Halifax railway station is on the Caldervale Line running services to Manchester Victoria, York, Selby via Bradford and Leeds, Blackpool North and London Kings Cross via Wakefield Kirkgate.

The town has much to offer for visitors, with its many Victorian buildings. Some of its attractions include the Grade I-listed Piece Hall, which is still used for a public market today, Halifax Minster which was completed in 1438, Calderdale Industrial Museum, the Town Hall, and Wainhouse Tower, the tallest folly in the world at 275ft.

Dean Clough is a converted mill factory, which was once one of the largest carpet manufacturing factories in the world and is now housing around 150 businesses and arts venues. These include retail shops as well as bars and restaurants.

There are also a number of outdoor activities on offer including Another World Adventure Centre, North Dean Woods, People’s Park and The Jungle Experience at Manor Heath Park.

Huddersfield is another nearby town in West Yorkshire. It lies approximately 14 miles south-west of Leeds and 24 miles north-east of Manchester.

The town is well situated with easy access to the M1 and M62 motorways, connecting Huddersfield to London and Leeds (via the M1) as well as Liverpool and Hull via Manchester and Leeds (via the M62). The A62 is the town’s inner ring road which relieves traffic congestion in the town centre where a lot of roads are car free.

Huddersfield train station is operated by TransPennine Express and runs frequent services to Dewsbury, Leeds, Manchester, Darlington, Hull, Liverpool, Manchester Airport, Middlesbrough, Newcastle, Scarborough and York. There are no direct trains to London, with passengers having to change at Manchester Piccadilly, Leeds, Wakefield Westgate or Mirfield.

With over 1,600 listed buildings Huddersfield has a rich architectural heritage. Most notably the Victoria Tower on Castle Hill. Other nearby attractions include the Tolson Museum, Oakwell Hall and Country Park, Huddersfield Art Gallery, Colne Valley Museum and Bagshaw Museum in Batley.

Nature lovers can choose from a wide range of great outdoor places to head to. Some of those places are The South Pennines, Peak District National Park, National Trust Marsden Moor, Dewsbury Country Park, Transpennine Trail or Spen Valley Greenway, to name a few.

Huddersfield has 3 main shopping areas which are home to most high street favourites, Kingsgate, The Packhorse Precinct and The Piazza Centre. It also hosts a number of markets throughout the week where some of the best local and independent producers and artisans sell their wares.

There are a number of primary and secondary schools in Huddersfield as well as 2 sixth form colleges, Huddersfield New College and Greenhead College, a further education college, Kirklees College, and the University of Huddersfield, offering a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

The University of Huddersfield is the largest employer in town, but there are several other employers like Brook Motors Ltd, Cummins Turbo Technologies, Syngenta AG, Pennine Radio Ltd, Dual Seal Glass, Ellis Furniture, Mamas and Papas, as well as Andrew Jones Pies.
