Bury is a market town on the River Irwell in Greater Manchester. It lies around 5 miles east of Bolton, 6 miles south-west of Rochdale and 8 miles north-west of Manchester.
The A56 and A58 both run through Bury via a ring road providing a connection between Chester and Broughton as well as Prescot to Wetherby respectively. The M66 motorway passes the town to the east and can be accessed via junctions 2 and 3, providing part of the route between the M62 and M60 motorways.
Bury Bolton Street railway station is a heritage railway station located on the East Lancashire Railway. Services run between Heywood and Rawtenstall. The Manchester Metrolink has several stops in Bury and operates services to Manchester, Altrincham, Eccles, Rochdale Town Centre, Ashton-under-Lyne, East Didsbury, MediaCityUK in Salford and Manchester Airport.
Some of the local landmarks and attractions include Bury Art Museum, Bury Castle, Castlesteads, Peel Tower, Bury Transport Museum and the Fusilier Museum.
From high street brands to independent boutiques and bustling markets there are plenty of places to shop in Bury. The Rock and The Mill Gate shopping centres offer a huge variety of shops, whilst Bury’s Famous Market with over 370 stalls offers fresh produce alongside fashion, household goods, toys, electrical goods, books, gifts and more. One can also find the local delicacy Bury Black Pudding here.
Education is provided by several primary and secondary schools, as well as nine high schools, two grammar schools, Holy Cross College and Bury College.
The largest employer in town is Bury Council, which as a metropolitan council is a single-tier organisation responsible for all of its local authority services. There are many smaller businesses providing work for locals, but Bury’s close proximity to Manchester make it also a perfect commuter town.
