About Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

Bury St Edmunds is a historic market and cathedral town in Suffolk, East of England. It lies around 27 miles north-west of Ipswich, 29 miles east of Cambridge, 32 miles north of Colchester and 45 miles south-west of Norwich.

The town is well connected via the road network with both the A14 and A143 going through Bury. Bury St Edmunds’ railway station is on the Ipswich-Ely line and is operated by Greater Anglia. There are regular services between Peterborough and Ipswich as well as Cambridge and Ipswich. A planned future railway line, East West Rail, will connect Oxford with Ipswich stopping at Bury.

With a history spanning over 1,000 years Bury has many historic landmarks such as St Mary’s Church, The Abbey, St Edmundsbury Cathedral, West Stow Country Park and Anglo-Saxon Village and Ickworth a National Trust property, to name a few.

Culture and the arts are also very popular in Bury with a visit to the Theatre Royal a must-do. Built in 1819 it is the last surviving Regency theatre in the country. The Apex Gallery is the only public art gallery in Bury and holds a variety of exhibitions throughout the year. Moyse’s Hall Museum houses a collection of fine arts and is one of the oldest domestic buildings open to the public in the region.

Bury offers plenty of choice for all shoppers’ needs with a mix of high street favourites as well as many great independent boutiques. As a foodie town Bury has everything from award-winning fine dining to quality home-cooked pub food. There are also two markets held each week, on Wednesday and Saturday offering everything from local produce, food stalls to clothes, pottery and plants.

Education in Bury is provided by a number of primary and secondary schools. West Suffolk College is the largest further education provider with over 10,000 students each year whilst the University of Suffolk at West Suffolk College provides foundation and undergraduate degrees.

Bury is also known for its Greene King brewery which was founded in 1799 and a British Sugar factory which produces Silver Spoon sugar. Both companies are big local employers. Tourism naturally plays a big part in the local economy and is worth more than £53.6 million, providing over 1,000 jobs.
