About Darwen, Lancashire

Darwen is a market town in the Blackburn with Darwen borough in Lancashire, in the North West of England. Blackburn lies around 4.5 miles north of Darwen, Preston around 14 miles north-west, Bolton around 9.5 miles south and Accrington around 8 miles north-east.

The A666 runs through Darwen providing a direct connection to Blackburn and Bolton. From Pendlebury it joins the A6 which runs from Luton to Carlisle.

Darwen railway station is served by Northern Trains and lies on the Ribble Valley Line from Rochdale/Manchester Victoria to Blackburn and Clitheroe. There are also regular bus services to Blackburn/Accrington as well as Bolton and Clitheroe.

The local landmarks include Darwen Jubilee Tower, Darwen Library and Darwen Town Hall. There are four parks in Darwen, three of which lead to the moors and Jubilee Tower. On a clear day one can see Blackpool Tower, the Isle of Man, North Wales and the Furness Peninsula from the top of Jubilee Tower. Darwen’s location in the West Pennine Moors also offers a great variety of walks and trails for anyone interested in outdoor pursuits. The moors are a Site of Special Scientific Interest and are also home to several reservoirs.

Darwen town centre offers all the usual shops as well as a great range of independent specialist stores. Darwen Market has offerings from local traders providing a wide selection of food, most of which is locally sourced. One can also find stalls offering essentials such as gifts, arts and crafts, or key cutting.

Education is provided by a number of primary and secondary schools. Further education and special & alternative schools are located in nearby Blackburn.
