Dover is a major ferry port in the county of Kent, South East England. It is situated directly across France across the Strait of Dover, 14.3 miles south east of Canterbury and 39.6 miles east of Maidstone.
This area is serviced by Dover Priory railway station which is the southern terminus of the South Eastern Main Line and is manged by Southeastern. Southeastern operates 1 train per hour (tph) to London St Pancras via Ashford International and another hourly service to London St Pancras via Deal, Ramsgate, Faversham, Chatham and Gravesend. There are also 2 tph calling at London Victoria via Chatham & Bromley South and another hourly service to London Charing cross via Sevenoaks. Aside from the Port of Dover being one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world there are over 45 commercial ferries a day transporting tourists across the channel to Calais and Dunkirk.
The town’s main retail hubs are centralised around the High Street and Biggin Street. The Charlton Shopping Centre is the only purpose-built shopping centre in town which features around 30 stores and services. There are many places of interest in town such as Dover Castle, Dover Museum, St Edmund’s chapel and of course the iconic White Cliffs of Dover.
The Port of Dover provides much of the town’s employment, whether it be in the busy shipping routes or upon the ferry services and cruise ships that make frequent daily trips across the channel. The shipping and logistics are handled by several big shipping firms such as the Dover Harbour Board, DFDS Seaways and George Hammond PLC to name a few. There are also jobs in the manufacturing industry, companies such as Megger Ltd, Pusterla 1880 and Multipanel UK Ltd all run their operations in town. New emerging industries in town are in the Bio-Technology & Life Sciences sector, as well as food packaging factories.
This location could be perfect for young families looking for local academic options for their children. Dover Federation for the Arts is a multi-academy trust that was formed from the conjoining of several local school bodies, this new association provides education from nursery to sixth form specialising in the arts across all ages. For those looking for secondary school options there is St Edmund’s Catholic School and Dover Christ Church Academy, the latter including a sixth form.
