About Hartlepool, County Durham

Hartlepool is a port town and the administrative centre of County Durham in the north-east of England. It lies around 17 miles south-east of Durham, 12 miles north-east of Stockton-on-Tees and 20 miles south-east of Sunderland.

The town is served by two main roads, the A179 and the A689, which both link Hartlepool to the A19. The A179 leads to the north-west to Durham, Sunderland and Tyneside, whilst the A689 leads to the south-west to Billingham, Stockton, Middlesbrough and York.

There are two railway stations serving Hartlepool, which are Hartlepool and Seaton Carew. Both are on the Durham Coast Line and are operated by Northern. Regular train services go to Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough. A direct service from Sunderland to London Kings Cross stops at Hartlepool and the journey takes around 3.5 hours.

Hartlepool’s seaport is owned by PD Ports and its docks are still in use today and capable of handling large vessels. Part of the docklands have been converted into a marina with the capability of berthing 500 vessels, both pleasure and working crafts.

Some of the local attractions include HMS Trincomalee at the Museum of Hartlepool, the National Museum of the Royal Navy Hartlepool, Tweddle Children’s animal farm, Heugh Battery Museum, Seaton Carew beach as well as Summerhill Country Park and Outdoor Activities Centre.

Shopping in Hartlepool can be done at the Middleton Grange Shopping Centre as well as three retail parks at the marina. A weekly market is also held behind the library close to York Road, whilst the farmers market is held every second Saturday in the car park of the Historic Quay and attracts sellers from all over the north of England.

Employment in Hartlepool is closely linked with the maritime industry and employers include PD Ports, which owns and operates Hartlepool Dock, Tata Steel Europe, Able UK which operates the Teesside Environmentl Reclamation and Recycling Centre and Hartlepool nuclear power station. Siemens and Van Oord also have operations in town for the offshore wind farm. Another important industry is the chemicals industry and companies include Huntsman Corporation, Omya, Baker Hughes and Frutarom.
