The London Borough of Newham is situated in the East London part of Inner London and has the third highest population of London boroughs. It lies around 5 miles east of the City of London and north of the River Thames. The Woolwich Ferry and Woolwich foot tunnel provide the only crossings to the south.
The LB of Newham is made up of 24 districts of which the major districts include: East Ham, West Ham, Stratford, Plaistow, Forest Gate, Beckton and Canning Town.
LB of Newham is very well connected via public transport. There are 18 DLR stations, 6 London Underground stations (Jubilee line, District and Hammersmith & City lines, Central line), 5 stations on the Elizabeth line, 3 London Overground stations, 2 c2c stations and 1 railway station.
The London Cable Car can also be found crossing the River Thames between Greenwich Peninsula and Royal Docks. London City Airport, Stratford International Station and the Dutchflyer rail-sea services via Stratford station to the Netherlands provide international travel services.
Newham was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and large parts of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium are located within the borough. West Ham United FC calls the London Stadium its home whilst a few non-league football clubs play in the surrounding areas. The Newham and Essex Beagles Athletics Club has its headquarters in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the London Regatta Centre can be found in Beckton.
There are several shopping opportunities such as Queen’s Market near Upton Park station, Gallions Reach Shopping Park in Beckton, East Shopping Centre in Green Street, Stratford Centre and Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford. The ICC London ExCel is an international conference centre and can easily be reached via Custom House DLR and the Elizabeth Line.
Education in Newham is provided by a large number of state primary and secondary schools. It also has a number of special and alternative schools as well as independent schools. The University of East London has two campuses in Newham, the Stratford Campus in Stratford and the Docklands Campus next to Royal Albert Dock. Birkbeck Stratford, a collaboration of the University of Birkbeck London and UEL, has a campus in the centre of Stratford.
