About London Borough of Waltham Forest, East London

Waltham Forest is a London borough in the north-east of London.

It is made up of 12 districts including Chingford, Walthamstow, Leyton and Bakers Arms. The North Circular Road goes through the borough dividing it into two very different halves. In the south you can find high rise apartment blocks and districts with inner-city characteristics, whilst the north has more affluent suburban areas comprising of stately homes, with better access to open spaces and parks.

The borough is served by two London Underground lines as well as the London Overground. The Central Line serves the south of the borough with stations at Leyton and Leytonstone. The Victoria Line goes through the middle of the borough with stations at Walthamstow Central and Blackhorse Road. The London Overground serves the Gospel Oak to Barking Line with stations at Walthamstow Queens Road, Blackhorse Road, Leyton Midland Road and Leytonstone High Road, and also runs services from Liverpool Street station. There are also a number of buses routes that connect the area to the rest of London.

The borough received £30m under the Mini-Hollands scheme, introduced by then Mayor Boris Johnson, in 2014 to build a Dutch-style cycling infrastructure, increasing the use of bicycles for shorter journeys instead of cars.

There are a number of open spaces in Waltham Forest including parts of Epping Forest, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Lee Valley Reservoir Chain. Other such spaces include Walthamstow Marshes, The Walthamstow Wetlands Reserve, Leyton Jubilee Park and Ridgeway Park amongst others.

Waltham Forest is historically known as the seat of the Arts and Crafts Movement under the tenure of William Morris, it is the first ever London Borough of Culture and was also one of four east London boroughs hosting events for the 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games.

There are many areas to explore, shop, eat out or just enjoy the day in this borough. One of the most noteworthy is Walthamstow Market, which has over 350 stalls selling food, spices, clothes and many other wares.
