Wimbledon is a district and town in the south-west of London. It lies around 7 miles south-west of Charing Cross and includes the electoral wards of Abbey, Dundonald, Hillside, Trinity, Village, Raynes Park and Wimbledon Park. It is considered an affluent suburb with the residential area split into the village and the town.
The area is well connected via public transport, with three tube stations, three railway stations and one tram station. The tube stations include South Wimbledon (Northern Line), Wimbledon Park (District Line) and Wimbledon station (District Line). Raynes Park, Wimbledon Park and Wimbledon are railway stations, whilst Wimbledon is also a Tramlink station. All stations are with the Oyster Fare Zone 3.
There are also around 10 different bus routes, including one night bus, that travel through the area.
Wimbledon Common is a large open space and most of it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. There are three named areas, Wimbledon Common, Putney Heath and Putney Lower Common, which total 460 hectares.
Wimbledon is probably best known for the oldest tennis tournament in the world, the Wimbledon Championships, which is being held at the All England Club since 1877. It draws huge crowds to the area each year for two weeks in July.
There are some fantastic places to shop in Wimbledon, with the village offering everything from independent shops to luxury brands, as well as some great food retailers. Whilst Wimbledon town is home to Ely’s, an upmarket shopping centre, the Centre Court shopping centre, as well as other well-known high street brands.
Wimbledon is also home to several companies and their UK headquarters, such as Zipcar, CIPD, Ipsotek, United Response, Lidl and the Communication Workers Union.
