About Canada Water, Catford, Clapham and Stratford

Canada Water

Canada Water is in the south-east of London and is named after a freshwater lake and wildlife refuge. Canada Water is in Travelcard Zone 2 and has very good transport connections to the rest of London. It lies on the Jubilee line on the Underground between Bermondsey and Canary Wharf and on the East London line of the Overground in between Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays. Canary Wharf is one stop away and Westminster can be reached in 10 minutes, whilst underground trains to Bond Street take around 15 minutes. Shoreditch High Street station, near Liverpool Street, can be reached within 10 minutes. Some of the local amenities include Canada Water Library, Surrey Quays Shopping Centre, Printworks London, Surrey Quays Leisure Park, Sands Film Studio, Rotherhithe Picture Library and Surrey Docks Farm. Green spaces in the area include Southwark Park, Russia Dock Woodland and Stave Hill Ecology Park.


Catford is in south-east London and is the administrative centre of the London Borough of Lewisham. The area is served by two railways stations, Catford and Catford Bridge. Train services from Catford are on the Thameslink and connect to Kentish Town, London Blackfriars, Orpington via Bromley South as well as Sevenoaks and Swanley. Whilst trains from Catford Bridge are operated by Southeastern and go to London Charing Cross, London Cannon Street via Lewisham as well as Hayes. Clapham is a district in south London and lies mostly within the London Borough of Lambeth with some areas extending into the London Borough of Wandsworth. The district is made up of three Lambeth wards: Clapham Common, Clapham Town and Thornton ward. Clapham has an extensive transport network with numerous bus routes connecting the are with much of the rest of London. There are also two railway stations: Clapham High Street and Wandsworth Road, as well as three Underground stations: Clapham North, Clapham Common and Clapham South. Nearby Clapham Junction in Battersea is a major rail transport hub and with around 180 trains passing through every hour Clapham Junction is the busiest train station in Britain. The main shopping areas include Clapham Old Town, Clapham High Street, Abbeville Road, Nightingale Lane and Clapham Road. Right in the centre of Clapham one can find Clapham Common, which, with its 89 hectares, is classed as one of the largest open spaces in south London and hosts several events throughout the year. It has two woodlands, four ponds, one wetland and a bandstand.


Stratford is a district in east London which lies around 6 miles east of Charing Cross. The area saw a big transformation when works of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park for the 2012 Summer Olympics started. In 2011 Westfield Stratford City shopping centre opened its doors, offering a big range of retailers as well as restaurant outlets, a cinema and casino. Regeneration in the area also brought new housing, jobs, schools and new amenities for local people. Stratford has an extensive transport network and is served by six stations covering a large catchment area. Stratford railway station is on the Great Eastern Main Line, North London Line and Lea Valley Lines, with services running to a large number of destinations such as London Liverpool Street, Shenfield, Southend Victoria, Ipswich, London Southend Airport and Norwich, to name a few. Stratford is also served by the Central and Jubilee lines of the London Underground and the DLR, connecting the area to the rest of the capital. There are also numerous London bus routes going through Stratford as well as National Express and Megabus services from Stratford City bus station.
