Streatham is district in south London, with most of it located in the London Borough of Lambeth and some parts in LB of Wandsworth and LB of Croydon. It lies around 5 miles south of Charing Cross and is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London.
Streatham is well connected for drivers as the A23 goes through Streatham connecting it with Brighton as well as Gatwick airport. There is no London Underground station in Streatham, the nearest tube stations are Tooting Broadway and Tooting Bec. However, Streatham Hill train station runs regular trains to Victoria Station via Balham, Wandsworth Common, Clapham Junction and Battersea Park. Another route calls at West Norwood, Gipsy Hill and Crystal Palace, whilst some trains continue to Sutton. Streatham’s other railway station, which is located on Streatham High Road, runs Southern train services between London Bridge and West Croydon and Thameslink services north to St Albans via London Blackfriars and St Pancras, and south to Wimbledon and Sutton. Both stations are located in travel zone 3. There are also numerous bus routes going through the area with destinations such as Liverpool Street, Westminster, Oxford Circus and Marble Arch.
In 2011 Streatham was awarded £300,000 from Round One of The Mayor’s Outer London Fund and a further £1.6m from Round Two, which was matched by £1m from Lambeth. The money has helped reopen Tudor Hall building behind Streatham library, providing a new performance space in the area, it helped refurbish Tate Library, provided financial support for the annual Streatham Festival, enabled improved public spaces, provide make-overs to building frontages as well as support local businesses.
In 2013 a new £26m ice rink and leisure centre complex opened to the public. This is part of a wider project which will also include 250 new homes, a new bus interchange, a new Tesco Extra, underground parking as well as public areas. The project is jointly funded by Lambeth Council and Tesco and will have provided almost 1,000 jobs.
Streatham High Street offers many independent and well-known high street shops as well as numerous restaurants and bars to explore. For anyone looking for nature Streatham Common is the perfect place. It is a large open space perfect for walking or summer picnics. There is an annual kite festival and the lawns of The Rookery, a formal garden, are used as an open-air cinema in the summer months.
