Lancashire is a ceremonial county in the north west of England and its administrative centre is Preston. Today it borders Cumbria in the north, Greater Manchester and Merseyside to the south and North and West Yorkshire to the east and the Irish Sea to the west. Lancashire is made up of 12 districts, which include City of Preston, City of Lancaster, Burnley and Blackpool. Historically Lancashire was a major centre for industries such as coal mining, textile production (cotton), and fishing. Since 2013 the largest private sector industry is defence with BAE Systems Military Air solutions based here. Other defence companies include BAE Systems Global Combat Systems, Ultra Electronic and Rolls-Royce. South Yorkshire is a metropolitan county in the north of England that consists of four metropolitan boroughs Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and Sheffield. This county lies on the east side of the Pennines, it borders Derbyshire to the west and south-west, West Yorkshire to the north-west, North Yorkshire to the north, the East Riding of Yorkshire to the north-east, Lincolnshire to the east and Nottinghamshire to the south-east. The area is serviced by Doncaster Sheffield Airport, one of the two airports in Yorkshire. It is located 3 miles south-east from Doncaster town centre and 19 miles east of Sheffield. This airport operates to many domestic and European locations and is the 15th busiest airport in the UK.
West Yorkshire is a metropolitan county in the north of England. It is made up of five metropolitan boroughs which are the City of Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, City of Leeds, and City of Wakefield. This county is bordered by Derbyshire to the south, Greater Manchester to the south-west, Lancashire to the north-west, north Yorkshire to the north and east and south Yorkshire to the south and south-east. West Yorkshire is home to Leeds Bradford Airport, situated 6.9 miles northwest of Leeds city centre and 9.2 miles from Bradford City Centre. It is the largest airport in Yorkshire and serves the cities of Leeds and Bradford as well as the surrounding areas. This region is historically associated with several traditional industries. Leeds, Bradford and Halifax mostly associated with the development of woollen mills and other coal mining areas. In more contemporary times Leeds has attracted investment from several financial institutions in an attempt to transform the city in to the financial centre it is recognised as today.
