Northampton is a market town in the East Midlands of England. It lies around 60 miles north-west of London and 50 miles south-east of Birmingham.
The M1 motorway passes Northampton from the west to the south and junctions 15, 15a and 16 serve the town, connecting it to London and Leeds. The A4 and A43 link Northampton with the surrounding area.
Northampton railway station is on the Northampton Loop of the West Coast Main Line with train services running to London Euston and Birmingham New Street and Crewe.
Birmingham Airport is around 39 miles north-west of Northampton and can be easily reached via the M1 and M6 as well as by train. East Midlands Airport and Luton Airport can also be accessed via the M1.
Some of the local attractions in and around Northampton include 78 Derngate, Althorp House, Coton Manor Gardens, Castle Ashby Gardens, Northampton Museum and Art Gallery and Delapre Abbey. There are also a number of green spaces that are worth a visit such as Abington Park, Rookery Open Farm and Pitsford Reservoir to name a few.
The Billing Aquadrome leisure park is on the eastern outskirts and there are an additional four leisure centres across Northampton, as well as the Benham Sports Arena, King’s Park Tennis Centre, Delapre Public Golf Course and Radlands Plaza. Northampton also has many parks and open spaces such as Abington Park, the Racecourse, Becket’s Park, Victoria Park and Hunsbury Hill.
Northampton’s historic market square in the centre of town and offers a fresh farmers market every Monday and a general market from Tuesday to Saturday. The centre of Northampton offers a number of well-known High Street brands, as well as several independent boutiques and retailers. There are also a variety of cafes, bars and restaurants. For further shopping opportunities there are the St James Retail Park, The Grosvenor Centre and the Riverside Retail Park.
Education is provided by 50 primary schools, 8 secondary schools and 5 special schools. The University of Northampton has its campus right by the River Nene in the town centre and offers courses from foundation and undergraduate levels to postgraduate, professional and doctoral qualifications. Its main subjects are business, education, health, science and technology, social sciences and the arts. Northampton is well-known for its shoemaking and to this day is still home to Barker Shoes, Church’s, Crockett & Jones, Edward Green, Tricker’s and Wildsmith. In the private sector the main employers include Avon Products, Barclaycard, Blacks Leisure Group, Nationwide Building Society, Panasonic, Travis Perkins, Coca-Cola, Schweppes, Simply Business, National Grid, Texas Instruments and Carlsberg.
