Norwich is a cathedral city in Norfolk, by the River Wensum. It lies around 40 miles north of Ipswich, 65 miles east of Peterborough and around 100 miles north-east of London.
Norwich is very well connected by road with the A47 bypassing in the east and connecting it to Great Yarmouth, King’s Lynn and Peterborough. The A11 connects the city to Cambridge, which also leads to the M11 motorway for London and the M25. The A140 connects it to Ipswich, whilst the A146 connects it to Lowestoft.
Norwich railway station is the terminus of the Great Eastern Main Line with trains running to London Liverpool Street. It is also the terminus of the Breckland Line to Cambridge, the Bittern Line to Sheringham and the Wherry Line to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. There are also services to Liverpool Lime Street via Peterborough, Nottingham, Sheffield and Manchester Piccadilly.
The closest airport is Norwich Airport, which lies 4 miles outside the city centre.
Norwich is very popular for short city breaks, some its attractions include: Norwich Cathedral, Norwich Castle, Cow Tower, Dragon Hall and The Forum. There are also a number of museums, such as Norwich Castle Museum, the Museum of Norwich, Strangers’ Hall, the Royal Norfolk Regimental Museum, the City of Norwich Aviation Museum and the Norwich Printing Museum.
Shopping in Norwich is easy as the compact city centre means one doesn’t have to travel far to find the best retailers. There is a choice of shopping centres including Chapelfield and Castle Quarter and the smaller retail parks at Riverside and Cathedral Park. The majority of the independent shops can be found around the Norwich Lanes, Cathedral Quarter and Magdalen Street. Norwich also has one of the oldest and largest outdoor markets right in the city centre, with 189 stalls trading from Monday to Saturday, some on Sundays, there is something there for everyone.
Education is provided by 56 primary schools, 13 secondary schools and 8 independent schools. There are also 5 schools for children with learning disabilities and there are 3 further education colleges, City College Norwich, Access to Music and Easton & Otley College. The University of East Anglia and Norwich University of the Arts also call Norwich their home.
Norwich’s economy is largely dominated by companies in the business and financial services, public services, retail, manufacturing and tourism. To the south-west lies the Norwich Research Park, which is a community of research organisations such as the Institute of Food Research and the John Innes Center, bringing together 30 science and technology-based businesses. The University of East Anglia and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital are also large employers locally.
