About Sheffield, South Yorkshire

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough in South Yorkshire, England and is the third-largest English district by population.

The city is well connected via the M1 and M18 motorways. The M1 links it to London and Leeds, whilst the M18 runs from Rotherham to Goole.

Sheffield is also very easy to reach by train as major routes pass through the station. East Midland Trains run a regular fast service from London St Pancras to Sheffield, taking approximately 2 hours. The Cross Country Route links the East of Scotland and Northeast of England with the West Midlands and the Southwest, linking Liverpool and Manchester with Hull and East Anglia. High Speed 2 is planned to be operational by 2033 serving a city centre station in Sheffield, running services to Birmingham, London, Leeds and Newcastle. There are 5 other railway stations in Sheffield that serve as commuter stations for suburban communities.

The closest airport is Doncaster Sheffield Airport which lies around 25 miles outside the city centre and operates regular flights to European destinations. Other nearby airports include Manchester Airport, Leeds Bradford Airport and Nottingham’s East Midlands Airport.

Sheffield has a number of museums and heritage attractions, such as The Metalwork Collection, Kelham Island Museum, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Weston Park Museum, Sheffield Cathedral, National Videogame Museum, Beauchief Abbey and Magna to name a few.

The Lyceum Theatre, the Crucible Theatre and the Studio Theatre provide a variety of entertainment and workshops throughout the year for young and old. Whilst the Lyceum is Sheffield’s home of pantomime, the Crucible is best known for hosting the prestigious World Snooker Championship since 1977.

Sheffield long sporting heritage aside from the World Snooker Championship make it is also home of the Sheffield Steelers, the UK’s first professional ice hockey team and the worlds oldest football club, Sheffield FC.
