St Albans is a cathedral city in Hertfordshire and lies around 20 miles north-west of London, 8 miles south-west of Welwyn Garden City and 11 miles south-east of Luton.
St Albans lies just off the intersection between the M1 and M25 motorways. The M1 can be accessed via junction 6 whilst the M25 can be accessed via junction 21a. This connects St Albans to Central London and Leeds.
There are two railway stations, St Albans City and St Albans Abbey. St Albans City is the larger station and is being served by Thameslink trains on the Thameslink route. Regular train services run to Luton, Bedford, Brighton via Gatwick Airport, Three Bridges via Redhill, Rainham via Dartford and to Sutton. Trains from St Albans Abbey station run on the Abbey Line all the way to Watford Junction which also connects to London.
There is much to do and see in St Albans and the surrounding area, such as: Verulamium Museum, St Albans Museum and Gallery, St Albans Town Hall, St Albans Cathedral, De Havilland Aircraft Museum, Shaw’s Corner and St Albans Organ Museum, to name a few. For outdoor lovers there are also a number of places to visit and explore: Roman theatre of Verulamium, River Ver trail, Heartwood Forest, Verulamium Park, Watercress nature reserve and Redbournbury watermill and bakery.
The town centre offers a number of shopping opportunities from well-known high street brands, as well as many independent retailers. There are also numerous cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars in the centre of town. The Charter Market is held every Wednesday and Saturday and the Farmers Market takes place every second Sunday of the month. Both are open air markets held in the centre in St Peter’s Street.
Education is provided by many state primary and secondary schools as well as a number of independent schools. Oaklands College has a campus in the Smallford area.
The economy in St Albans is very strong and it’s main sectors are retail, professional services and research and development. Rothamstead Research and the Building Research Establishment are both world-class research centres located in St Albans. Other large employers include: Britvic Plc, Henkel Limited, Burton’s Foods Limited, Skechers USA Limited and Butlins Skyline Limited, to name a few. St Albans is also a commuter city and many residents travel into central London via the fast rail links.
