Widnes is a town in Cheshire, England on the northern bank of the River Mersey, directly across from Runcorn. Warrington is around 8 miles to the east and Speke, a part of Liverpool, is around 4 miles west.
Widnes is well connected via road network with the A562 going through the town connecting it to Liverpool and the M57 and M62 motorways.
The town also has two railway stations, Hough Green and Widnes which are operated by East Midlands Railway and Northern. Northern run regular services to Liverpool and Manchester city centre from both stations whilst East Midlands Railway connect Widnes with hourly services to Liverpool, Manchester, Stockport, Sheffield, Nottingham and Norwich. Typically passengers travelling to and from London, the Midlands and the South tend to travel to Runcorn station instead and make the short journey across the Mersey Gateway Bridge by bus or taxi.
There are two airports nearby, Liverpool John Lennon Airport, which is around 6 miles away and Manchester Airport, which is around 25 miles away.
Widnes town centre offers a diverse selection of popular high street stores and smaller independent boutiques as well as Widnes indoor and outdoor markets where one can find groceries, flowers and gifts. Widnes Shopping Park also offers a number of shops and food outlets.
There are also a number of community facilities such as the library in Victoria Square, The Queens Hall Studio, Victoria Park, Kingsway Leisure Centre and Hive Leisure Park.
Education is provided by a number of primary schools, nursery schools, three secondary schools, Riverside College and three special schools.
Widnes is an industrial town whose main industry is still the manufacture of chemicals.
